GIMP already has the bones of a serious editor, layers, masks, color management, and enough menus to make you squint. The tricky part is crossing that invisible line between "I can edit" and "I can actually get work done." More than just being about features, professional tools are also about how fast you can use them. You want fewer detours, fewer manual repeats, and more buttons that do exactly what you meant the first time, perhaps by using a patch that makes GIMP feel like Photoshop.
